I've seen butter times

YO! Butter returns tomorrow night. I have to say I'm pretty stoked about this lineup-the combo of Wordburglar and Co-op brings together reps from two fine regional scenes (Halifax and Winnipeg, respectively), that we don't get to see often enough here. We may even see a few surprise guests show up, at which time heads (mine) will explode.

shiny toy guns

Caught Shine A Light on the weekend and I have to say I was quite impressed with the overall production both in terms of the performances and Martin Scorsese's A-level documentation of the band's 2-night stint at the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan back in late '06.

Quality seems to be the order of the day with this, with what appears to be no expense spared in a lavish set, combined with a number of top-tier artists both behind and in front of the cameras. Scorsese splices in vintage interview footage of the band (presumably in part to ease continuity in what were most likely longish stoppages between songs while filming), and leans towards the front row centre position more often than not (highly reminiscent of his work on the legendary Woodstock Doc).

Seeing the Stones 5 stories tall on IMAX is at times startling-everyone is of course aware of the band's age, but Jagger's continuing rampant mobility onstage remains a Master Class in stage presence and showmanship. Guest performances by Jack White and Buddy Guy also prove to be a showcase of fine blues-related guitar work, with White really coming across as THE heir apparent of his generation in terms of being able to segue seamlessly between rock, country, and blues as the Stones do.

Designer Guys

Over the past few days I've had the opportunity to get into the heads of some of (capital-F) Fashion's most famous and well-know (and, note above pic, eccentric) Designers, Karl Lagerfeld and Calvin Klein.

Lagerfeld is someone I've always thought, as an often fashion-backward person, to be a bit of a loonie to be honest. With his ubiquitous shades and an oft-silent intimidating presence, Lagerfeld outwardly personifies the world of Couture-flamboyant, dramatic, and most of all expensive. An extensive interview with (as you know, my fave) Charlie Rose changed a lot of my impressions on him though-yes, he can be aloof and pretentious, but is no nut by any stretch-and if anything, remains more relevant and ahead of Fashion than others half his 74 years could ever hope to be.

Another icon himself, Klein was subject to a massive recent feature in Vanity Fair, and writer Ingrid Sischy spares no expense of detail to compose a portrait of his eras, both personal and business (the two are basically inseparable-up until his sale of the company a fews ago). Klein's life has had no shortage of drama, with his daughter once getting kidnapped(!), to his ongoing hits and busts that followed his career in fashion.

What's interesting is that both Lagerfeld and Klein have found great success in the same industry with completely different image sets and levels of charisma.

APRIL!

Concert timetable mixups aside, April is shaping up to be a rather fabulous month with the 1) a rare visit from some Family Units next week 2) a crazy party-oriented weekend with YO! Butter and the Remember the '90s going down together on the 25 & 26th, respectively, AND, most great-ly 3) jetting off to some time in London and Paris on the 29th! Got to love spring.

DAMMIT!

Through my own bone-headedness in miss-reading a lengthy list of shows for the Beautiful Noise HD concert show currently taping in Toronto, I missed out on My Morning Jacket's show last night, despite having tickets. gah! luckily chromewaves was on hand to cover it (and make me hit my head more times against the wall...).

Oh well, that leaves my undivided attention for Gravity Wave's free party tonight at the Great Hall. Should be a lot of fun.

also that suns/nuggets game last night? freakin' awesome!
